USA - Cabin Life in Summit County

Going to the mountains for the weekend makes you feel like you can breathe for a minute from the city. Don’t get me wrong, I love the city and could never live in the mountains, but it is nice to visit. You get to unplug and relax for a bit which is a nice change and mainly due to the lack of service.

I’m lucky as my brother has a mountain house outside of Montezuma, Colorado in Summit County and from time to time, I get to visit for the weekend. We were going away this weekend to celebrate my dad’s seventieth birthday. It was my family (parents, brother), my brothers’ fiancé and a longtime friend of my brother. We arrived at the mountain house on Friday evening after driving to the mountains at night, which is terrifying and beautiful at the same time. After unpacking the cars, we went outside to look at the stars. It is unbelievable the number of stars you can see away from the city lights, we could even see the Milky Way. Fortunately for us, this weekend was a peak of a meteor shower. I saw four shooting stars on our first night, it was magical.

On our second day at the cabin, we all took our time waking up as there are no alarms to snooze. A fire was lit, conversation was had and coffee was drunk. After being lazy for a bit, some of us took a walk, others ran and another biked. Once we were all showered and ready to take on the day, we had lunch and cake for my dad’s birthday.

After buying so many presents over the years, we decided this year for a birthday present we would give an experience to our dad. We told him we were driving into Frisco for a picnic snack before going out to dinner. We arrived at the marina looking for a place to lay our blankets but instead gave our dad a boat rental for the afternoon. He seemed surprised and we walked out onto the dock and got into our speed boat. I miss being around water, this is a happy place for me. We ventured off in our boat on Lake Dillon, it is absolutely stunning. Just the six of us on a boat in the middle of the lake, we took a ride around and stopped in the middle for some cheese, fruit, a baguette and some wine. It was late afternoon and the weather was perfect, the lighting unbelievable and the views spectacular. Being out on the lake I feel small, like I am but a speck. It makes me want to get a boat and sail around the world, to explore and to see all there is to see. In these moments, I want to leave it all behind, take the chance and be free.

Saddened when our boat excursion came to an end, we walked into Frisco for dinner. We ate at an Italian restaurant, so my dad could have cheese ravioli for his birthday meal, one of his favorites. Frisco is cute and a quaint town to explore. There are shops, restaurant and a couple of coffee shops.

After dinner, we went back to the cabin and lit a fire. Some people went out to the hot tub. I grabbed my blanket and a pillow and went to lay on the deck for some more stargazing. On our last night at the cabin, I saw seven shooting stars. Laying under the sky and seeing an infinite number of stars and then seeing the shooting stars, it was simply magnificent. I can close my eyes and be back in that one moment in time. I hope it will be a memory I will never forget.

The following morning, we have a fantastic breakfast and start preparing the cabin for departure. Leaving the cabin is always bitter sweet for me. I am happy to get back to civilization and properly functioning electronics, but it is peaceful in the mountains. I look forward to my next visit, I like this cabin life thing.
